RefWorks Instruction

    What is RefWorks?

     RefWorks is a powerful online research management, writing and collaboration tool designed to help researchers at all levels easily gather, organize, store and share all types of information and to instantly generate citations and bibliographies.

    Creating an Account

    Creating Your Account As Part Of the Brigham and Women's Medical Library Subscription:

    Note:  When you first create your account, please use a Brigham and Women's network computer (on an IP-authenticated computer).   

    1. Open your browser and go to the Brigham and Women's Hospital Medical Libray web page and select Databases on the right side of the page. 

    2. Make sure your screen says Login using RefWorks Credentials Brigham and Women's Hospital.

    3. Click the Sign up for a New Account link.

    4. Complete the New User Information box.

    Note:  When creating your Login Name, please do not use the following characters:

    * Asterisk

    < >[ ] Brackets

    = Equal sign

    + Plus sign

    " Quotes

    \ / Slashes

    , . : ; Comma, Period, Colon, Semicolon

    1. Click Create Account.

      You will receive an email confirmation.

    2. After you click on create account, you'll be brought in to your new, empty RefWorks account where you can begin adding your references.


      Logging in to RefWorks

      Users that are part of the Brigham and Women's Medical Library subscription have several ways to log in to RefWorks. The first is from an IP-authenticated network computer at BWH. The second is from a computer that is not IP-authenticated (for example, your own personal computer at home).  Instructions for logging in from a non-BWH computer are below.  In either case you should always see Login to RefWorks "Brigham and Women's Hospital" on the page you log in from. 

      Logging in from Off-Site:

      1. In your browser, go to  You'll be brought to the RefWorks Login Center where you'll see three tabs (Remote Access, Individual Log-In, Trial Log-In) .

      2. In the Remote Access tab, enter the Group Code (BWH's group code is RWBWH) and click on Go To Login.

      3. Enter your personal Login Name and Password.
